That “Crazy” Idea Might be the Answer!

Welcome the Crazy Idea

In this week’s episode of Third Act Unscripted, we dive deep into a question that’s been on our hearts: What if the “crazy idea” you’re dreaming about isn’t so crazy after all? What if it’s actually the most aligned, authentic next step for your life?

Coming back together after a few months apart, we (Annie and Katie) found ourselves swirling around the concept of reinvention in midlife, particularly for women in their “third act.” We reflected on the biological, emotional, and spiritual shifts that happen when the kids leave home, the careers settle (or not), and a vast space opens up in front of us. And it’s not just about what’s next—it’s about how we show up differently for ourselves.

Biology and the New Midlife Reality

One thing that stuck with us was a TikTok video we discussed, where the creator pointed out that historically, women never “emptied the nest.” Women raised large families, and by the time the youngest was grown, the oldest was often already having children of their own. There was no major break, no “what now?” moment. Today, we’re biologically wired for a reality that no longer exists—and that can leave us feeling disoriented.

We shared personal reflections on how our hormonal and emotional landscapes have shifted. Katie noticed how the innate desire to “mother” seemed to diminish naturally with time, while Annie recognized that the grief and excitement around her children becoming independent were pulling her in different directions. We talked about how midlife reinvention is a relatively new phenomenon, and why it’s not surprising that we often feel lost. It’s not just a “you problem.” It’s a human evolution challenge. Knowing this brought us a sense of validation and compassion for the messy middle we’re all navigating.

Lifestyle Over Career: A New Lens

One of the biggest insights from our conversation was about shifting the focus from “what do I want to do” to “what kind of lifestyle do I want to live?” It’s easy to get caught up in doing—getting a new job, starting a business, or launching a project—but what if the real opportunity is in designing a way of being?

Katie shared how returning from Spain made her realize the importance of lifestyle: simple mornings, slow conversations, walking everywhere. It wasn’t about productivity. It was about presence. Annie reflected on the importance of meaningful contribution and how action rooted in authenticity, not obligation, brings fulfillment. Lifestyle isn’t just about where you live or what job you have—it’s about how you feel when you wake up in the morning, how you move through your day, and how you connect with yourself and others.

Permission to Dream

If you’re feeling like you don’t know where to start, we want to offer you this: You have permission to dream. You have permission to write down the wild, crazy ideas that pop into your head—without judgment.

Maybe it’s living on a lavender farm in France. Maybe it’s going back to school, starting a non-profit, opening an art studio, or simply taking a sabbatical to figure it out. Maybe it’s living a contemplative life at an ashram, becoming a potter by the sea, or finally writing that novel you’ve been carrying in your heart. The “crazy idea” might be the most true part of your next chapter.

The Courage to Begin

Starting anything new—especially when it feels vague or uncertain—requires courage. It requires us to listen to ourselves in a way we may never have before. We’re not chasing external validation anymore. We’re not following a prescribed path. We’re writing our own scripts.

We talked about how it might feel easier to give up—to “hang it up” at midlife—but if you’re here with us, listening and reading, that’s not your story. You’re choosing the harder, braver, and ultimately more rewarding path of self-discovery and reinvention. And you are not alone in this journey.

Here’s the key: You don’t need to figure it all out today. You don’t even need to commit to the crazy idea right now. You just need to let yourself play with it, explore it, and see where it leads. Give yourself the grace to experiment without needing an outcome right away.

A New Definition of Success

In our first adulthood, we had a clear societal definition of success: degrees, jobs, marriage, kids, retirement. Now? The old milestones don’t apply. Success in our third act is self-defined. It might look like freedom, adventure, contribution, creativity, peace, or community. It might look like all of the above, or none of them.

Success could be about feeling expansive every morning. About living somewhere that inspires your soul. About spending your days in meaningful ways, whether that means starting a new career, volunteering, traveling, creating art, or simply being present in the life you’ve built. It’s wide open—and that can be terrifying and thrilling all at once.
